Jill's a gangster!

My shift at work decided that we needed to dress with a theme. Since we work for the Police Department, we went with a gangster theme. Detectives and Officers in the building heard about us and we had visitors all day! It was so much fun. My daughters said I looked beautiful and should dress like this every day. I think we need to have a talk about what real beauty is, not gold chains and lipstick. Sheesh. Anyhoo, dress-up day at work was AWESOME!

Who said chola's can't be elegant? This is my arabesque, ballet style. Don't be jealous.

Catch up

It's been awhile since I've added pictures from my camera, so here goes!

Ben has taken it upon himself to be Grace's night time buddy. He reads her stories, sings her songs, and tucks her into bed. It's so sweet, I love seeing my kids love each other.

Presenting the girls matching pajamas! I just did the bottoms and we wore t-shirts with them, but it was such a fun project and the girls loved it.

Ember finished her paint by number project that she got for her birthday and she did a great job. We framed it and hung it up in the dining room because she did such a great job.

School Pictures!

I had to take Grace's pictures myself because we couldn't afford another package. I draped a blue sheet over the china hutch and set her up on a stool, and voila! Pre-school pictures!

My scanner doesn't play nice with Windows Vista so I can't use it. I improvised by using my camera to take a picture of a picture. There's a little flash-feedback in the corners, but otherwise these turned out ok. Ember is in 4th grade and Ben is in 2nd grade this year.

That's it! Family updates; check.

Comment moderation

Ok, since I turned on comment moderation I've been forgetting to actually go and MODERATE then. I had 30 at once, and lots of questions, so here goes:

Kristie: I got my hair done at a salon on a cruise ship for our 10 year anniversary. It was totally worth it, I could never do that myself :)

Debbie: Again, cruise ship. It was formal night and SOOO fun to dress up for once! Still, t-shirt and jeans will always be my favorite.

Wendy: They did do an H1N1 swab and it came back negative, it was probably just a cold virus combined with his seasonal allergies that caused lots of mucous, which caused the secondary infection of pneumonia. That's just my non-medical theory :)

Jasmine: We did take him to Good Night Pediatrics on Higley and Southern, but it was the night before... I think. It was a Thursday night, which would have been Oct. 1. That would have been a weird coincidence though. :)

Millie / Lilac / Natalie: I can't find you on FB! You'll have to re-friend me, you have too common a name :)

Um... I think that's all. I'll do better about reading my comments in the future :)

Conversations with Grace

Keep in mind that during this entire conversation with my four year old she's using an obstinate fists-on-her-hips kind of voice. I was driving her to pre-school and there was a pigeon crossing the road.

G: Why is that bird in the street? Birds don't walk in the street.

M: Sure they can.

G: No, they only walk on sidewalks or on buildings, cuz' they're birds.

M: They can walk anywhere. If they see a car coming they just move.

G: Birds can't see!

M: Yes they can, they have eyes.

G: No, I mean they only see in white and black, like dogs.

M: How did you know that? About dogs being color blind? Did someone teach you that?

G: No, I just always knew it.

M: Ok, just give me a hug, it's time for school.

G: Fine. Mom? Your tummy's getting bigger.

M: *sigh*

Girls weekend in Overgaard

I brought Emily & Toni up to our family cabin in Overgaard for Sunday and Monday for a little rest and relaxation, and we had a blast!!

Woods Canyon Lake was amazing, but very chilly. We saw lots of fall colors, chipmunks, and a bald eagle looking majestic perched at the top of a tall pine.

A special thanks goes to Toni for introducing us to Charlie Clark's Steakhouse in Pinetop, and the BEST prime rib I have ever eaten.... EVER.

I didn't really have to tinkle, but the sign was funny :)

Sleeping on the drive home, thanks to benadryl. At least I wasn't drooling.

The mountains were amazing, but the valley welcomed us home with this amazing sunset. Nice photography, Emily :)

Even though it was 44 degrees outside, we just had to sit on the front porch swing sipping hot chocolate. It was so quiet. No traffic sounds, no TV's or radios, no animal sounds, not even the wind. It was perfectly silent.

We saw some beautiful fall colors everywhere we went, but I really liked this little cluster of yellow leaves on the ground at the lake.

I feel the same way! Yay vacation in the mountains! We have to go back when there's snow on the ground. Girls? Make your calendars for February.

Happy October!

In the middle of the night...

In the middle of the night

I go walkin' in my sleep

From the mountains of faith

to the river so deep.....

Whatever, I don't even like that song. I was just thinking that it's the middle of the night again and I'm not sleepin' either.

Sounds like a great time to blog!

Updates:

* Ember & Ben are both home from the hospital and recovering. (That's right folks, the same day Ben came home... Sunday afternoon... Ember went there herself Sunday night). They both still need regular breathing treatments and daily meds of all varieties (they're not for sale) but all-in-all they're A-OK. Back to school and everything!

* Austin is sick. :P

* Grace & Mom still seem to be ok, cross your fingers.

* It's October, so I bought a large bag of candy corns and ate them all myself. Thank goodness it's sweater season.

* I won a contest (?) at work and got a set of magnets that are all of my favorite punctuation faces. :) :( :P X[ ;) !) :\ They're awesome.

* I bought a new journal. I wasn't even finished writing in my old journal, but the cover on this one was way cooler. I even bought a new package of pens to write in the new journal. It's an obsession, I can't stop. They don't even have a 12 step program for this one.

* I shampooed my carpets. They looked awesome until my dog peed on it.

* I sewed matching pajamas for me and my 2 daughters. Mine turned out great, four year old's are smashing, but I think I sewed one leg of the nine year old's upside down. She's wearing them because she loves me, but she said the left leg feels weird. Plus it's longer than the right leg. I feel sheepish.

* I'm more than halfway done Christmas shopping. Suckers!

That's all my updates for now. Stay tuned for future shenanigans! We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Our weekend

Austin and I came home from a play Thursday night and Ben was still awake with a fever. He said his throat and stomach hurt, and he was breathing funny. It was rapid and shallow and when I listened close it sounded very tight. We decided he needed to go to Urgent Care, so Austin packed him up and drove away.

I got into pajamas, washed my face, took my medication that helps me sleep, and was ready for bed. Then Austin called and said they were sending Ben from the Urgent Care to the hospital via Ambulance. Huh?!

His pulse-ox was 84, the percentage of oxygen in the blood, and it should be in the high nineties if not 100. His respitory rate (breaths per minute) was high 50's, sometimes 60 and it should be in the 20's. His heart rate was also way higher than normal. The EMT's put in an IV in the ambulance, which he handled better than expected, and he ended up at Banner Desert hospital.

Here's my boy plugged into the wall in too many places:

It's Saturday night, and he's coming home tomorrow. He had to be off the oxygen for 24 hours first, and he's doing so much better. He has pneumonia and an ear infection, but we still don't know what caused the breathing problems. Maybe asthma, maybe not. He's never had any symptoms like this before, but we have a follow up appointment on Tuesday and hopefully we'll learn more then. I'm just so glad my baby boy is ok.

Thanks to everyone who offered babysitting, meals and support. You guys rock!
