One more...

I know I did my gratitude post for the day, but I wanted to add a thank you note to an anonymous friend.

I've been having a really hard time lately with my health and my depression. This gift basket was left in front of my house on Thursday morning. The card was thoughtful, and signed by 'a friend.' I have no idea who this is from, but I wanted to offer a heartfelt thank you if you happen to read my blog. It made my day and I'm very grateful.

I'm grateful for friends whom I know, love and appreciate. I'm also grateful for friends who wish to remain anonymous and are willing to reach out with compassion in my time of need.

Gratitude

Today I am thankful for mascara. Without it I would look like a zombie from 'Night of the Living Dead." I have very pale skin, my eyebrows and eyelashes are so light it looks like I don't have any, and there aren't any defining features on my face. I can't imagine living in pioneer days when they relied on natural beauty, because I am NOT a natural beauty. I need to add a little color and definition in order for my face to stand out from the crowd. Not even the crowd, to stand out from the wall! So thank goodness for mascara.

Give Thanks

In an effort to reclaim my blog from cynicism and politics, I am going to focus the entire month of November on gratitude. I'll try and post something every day that I'm thankful for. Today's blessing in disguise... Clorox disinfecting wipes. How did moms ever survive before these things? I can clean and disinfect everything! They're convenient, smell good, fast, and I don't have to put them in the laundry! It's all about the little things, people.

Let me clarify...

I don't think Barack Obama is the devil. I don't think he's the beast that was prophesied about in Deuteronomy that will be allowed to reign for four years and ruin the country from within. The end of the world will come when it comes, and I just want to live my life in the meantime.

The problem is, he's going to ruin MY meantime! I disagree with him on every major issue. I think abortion is wrong, I think national defense is vital, I think illegal immigration needs to be stopped, I think nationalized health care is a bad idea that won't work, I don't believe in handouts and freebies for people who won't work for anything themselves, I don't want to pay higher taxes and have a bigger government, I think spreading the wealth is socialism, I think socializing with terrorists is wrong even if it was a long time ago and he's not the worst one out there, I think listening to hate speech for 20 years is the same thing as condoning it, I think the office of the presidency shouldn't be a journey of self discovery and we needed someone with more experience. He's a smooth talking puppet for the democratic party and I'm dreading the next four years.

Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For anyone who may be offended by my picture, it's just a joke. He is the democratic president elect, but he is also MY president elect. I have to live with that. I want everyone to understand, my children especially, that I still pledge allegiance to the flag no matter who is standing in front of it for his photo opportunity.

Stake Conference

I was asked to speak tonight at the adult session of Stake Conference. My mom asked me to send her my talk, and after the meeting tonight Austin asked me to put the text on our blog. I am hesitant to self publicize so outrageously, but here it is:

“I had some sleepless nights about what I wanted to say tonight, especially because of the special preparations that our Stake Presidency asked us to do in order to be ready for this meeting. We were to re-read one of the four gospels and ponder the meaning of the atonement in our lives, and our relationship with the Savior. In order to tell you about my relationship with the Savior, I have to share some things that are very personal.

I have bi-polar disorder, which is the new name for manic depression. The mania is uncontrolled, hyperactive and sometimes destructive behavior. The depression is self explanatory, and devastating. I believe this is one of Satan’s greatest and most effective tools because it destroys families. If I succumb to it, he succeeds in destroying my husband and my children, as well as me. It leaves me feeling hopeless, lonely, and distanced from my Heavenly Father and my Savior. It’s like I feel the consequences of sin without having done anything wrong.

I often feel like I’m a bad mother, failing at the one thing that I was sent to earth to do. My children are suffering from the consequences of my disease, and they didn’t do anything to deserve that, they didn’t do anything wrong!

I have struggled with admitting that I have this disease, because in the past I’ve been told that if I obey the Word of Wisdom and eat fruits & vegetables, if I read my scriptures and go to the Temple, then I’ll be happy. I won’t need to take “happy pills.” Because I do take medication for my disease, I sometimes feel embarrassment and alienation. Probably self-inflicted, but real to me nonetheless.

I have an unshakeable testimony that the Savior offers hope when I feel hopeless, offers unconditional love when I feel lonely, and offers healing that only He can offer because of His atonement. The atonement heals all kinds of pain, both physical and emotional. Pain from the consequences of sin, and pain that was inflicted upon me and isn’t my fault.

I also have Crohn’s disease, something that maybe not everyone has heard of but people understand it better because it’s a physical disease, not a mental one. I’m dealing with a flare up right now and I’m on an all liquid diet. I’m struggling with severe stomach pain and I almost took myself to the emergency room twice this week. I almost didn’t have to give this talk! Actually, if I hadn’t opened up my big mouth to President Lewis I wouldn’t have been asked to give it in the first place.

My husband and his brother gave me a priesthood blessing on Thursday night, and a miracle happened. I still have stomach pain, I’m still at risk for a bowel obstruction and hospitalization. That wasn’t the miracle. In the words of the blessing, my husband addressed my emotional pain. He said the Lord is aware of my struggles, and He is pleased with my efforts as a mother. He said my children love me. He blessed me to feel the peace only the Savior can offer. My body wasn’t healed, but my heart was.

I think that’s the greatest miracle of the atonement. In the scriptures you read about people with leprosy who were healed, the blind who were made to see, and I know that physical miracles still happen every day. Those are the miracles that people expect to see, that they think about when they think of the word miracle, some kind of physical manifestation. The healing of the heart is more amazing to me, because it can’t be seen by anyone but me. It’s personal.

With depression, only I know how much it hurts. And my Savior knows, because he knows my heart. He can and will heal me as often as I need it. Physical healing happens once, but emotional healing happens all the time. My disease has no cure and I will struggle with this for the rest of my life. I have experienced some real darkness, but I have learned that everything has it’s opposite. Pleasure and pain. Health and sickness. Light and darkness. I have felt the presence of my Savior lifting me from my despair and offering me hope. I don’t know a lot of things, but I know my Savior lives and I know He loves me. I know He has healed me, and He will heal me again, as often as I need it and as many times as I ask for it.

Crohn's Disease

I have Crohn's disease. I was going to upload a picture to explain what this is and how it affects my body, but they're all extremely gross. Just go to Google and type in Crohn's disease and search the images section. You'll see what I mean.

Most people with Crohn's understand what they can and cannot eat. Things like popcorn, nuts, wheat, or dairy products often cause a flare up of symptoms. I've never had trouble with any foods in any amounts, so I considered myself pretty lucky. This week I carved pumpkins with my kids, so naturally I toasted the pumpkin seeds. I mixed some olive oil, worchestershire sauce, garlic and onion powder and seasoning salt and baked them until they were crispy. They were delicious! Also, they cause a flare up of my symptoms.

Without being too gross, the seeds won't digest. They can't pass through the terminal illeum (the part of the intestines where the small bowel meets the large bowel) because I have pre-existing inflamation and scar tissue. They aren't being broken down into more easily digestible pieces, and I'm suffering some serious stomach pain. I've put myself on an all liquid diet, because I throw everything else up. If this doesn't get better by tomorrow I'm taking myself to the emergency room. Those pumpkin seeds were delicious, but I'm not sure it's worth the trade off. Aurgh!!!!! (That's a real word).

Family Fun

Monday night we carved jack-o-lanterns for Family Home Evening. The kids designed and helped carve one all by themselves! Guess which one is their design!

The kids liked to watch the pumpkin cleaning, but they didn't want to help... that meant getting their hands dirty! They were willing to eat the toasted pumpkin seeds though!

Poor Gracie has been sick this week with really high fevers. We don't know what she has, but if the fever lasts one more day we're going to the doctor. I thought this picture of Austin carrying her to bed was really sweet.
